Abraham
Lincoln
Sixteenth President of the United States
1861 - 1865
Born: February 12, 1809 in Hardin
County, Kentucky
Died: April 15, 1865 in Washington,
DC (assassination)
This
is believed
to be the final photograph of Abraham Lincoln during his
lifetime. According to John Hay and John Nicolay,
Lincoln's
secretaries, it was one of three pictures taken late in the afternoon
of Monday,
March 6, 1865 by Henry Warren of Waltham, Massachusetts. The President
was seated on the balcony of the south portico of the White House, and
his ruffled hair bears witness to the stiff breeze reported on that
day. The original negatives from all three
photographs are lost.
