Camp Mitigwa Today
Images from Rangeley, Maine
Many thanks to Jennifer Hilton and Stacey Clark
for providing these contemporary images in and around (and over)
the site of our favorite summer camp
"Mitigwa Road is off Route 16 heading west from Rangeley to Oquossoc. It's still private and paved with gravel.
The view in the photo on the right is heading back to the main road, and was taken just past the stone chimney,
probably about where the nature house was. The camp road used to seem very long, but it's only about a half-mile
or maybe a bit more. Everything is pretty grown up with trees, and there isn't much open space looking toward
Dodge Pond. There are lots of very nice private homes there now. I recall when the camp was sold that many of
the cabins were also sold and moved. This was a memorable drive for me." [Jennifer Hilton, 8/12/15]
A lonely, lovely reminder: the remains of the mess hall fireplace.
The photos below came from Stacey Clark, son of
Jeff and Barbara Clark, who was Chief Nixon's daughter.
"The top photo is Rt. 16, looking down toward Mitigwa Road and Dodge Pond.
In the middle photo, I am positioned directly over Dodge Pond, facing north toward Quimby Pond.
The view at the bottom is of Rangeley Lake, with the canoe passage to Mitigwa in the upper left."
