My father's solo trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (July/August 1925)

Dad was just 17 when his parents put him aboard the U.S.M.S. Southern Cross,
a 13,789-ton cargo steamer built in 1920 and transferred in 1925 to the Munson Steamship Line.
In 1939, she was returned to the U.S. Maritime Commission and refitted as a military transport.
She was scrapped in 1951.

While primarily a cargo steamer, the U.S.M.S. Southern Cross offered passengers first class accommodations
and an opportunity to visit various ports of call along the east coast of South America.

Below are the documents required for his travel.

Downtown Rio de Janeiro as my father would have seen it in 1925.
