UK 2006
Ten delightful days with my
daughter touring London and the Highlands of Scotland
- May 26th through June 4th -
Part Deux
The Tower of London has been the setting
for many great events during its 900-year history as a royal palace and
fortress, prison and place of
execution, arsenal, mint, menagerie and jewel house.

Consistent with my experience at Lafayette,
I found the intriguing twists and turns of English history
as described by our Yeoman Warder
as interesting as they were hard to remember.
Did you know, for instance,
that James I and James VI were the same person?
Carrying my "brolly" seemed to keep the showers at bay
during our fascinating tour of one of England's premier landmarks.
In the background, Queen's House and Tower Green,
adjacent to the site where Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard,
two of Henry VIII's ill-fated wives, were beheaded.
Begun in the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-1087),
the White Tower (left-foreground) marks the start of the Tower of
London's history.
To the right of the White Tower is Waterloo Block, home to the Crown
jewels.
The beautiful Chapel Royal of St. Peter ad Vincula (right)
is open for public worship on Sunday mornings,
but may otherwise be seen as part of the main Yeoman Warder tour.
