UK 2006
Ten delightful days with my
daughter touring London and the Highlands of Scotland
- May 26th through June 4th -
DISCOVERING LOCH NESS & GLEN AFFRIC
Tony Harmsworth guided us for a full day of sightseeing
in and around
Loch Ness and Glen Affric.
His breadth of knowledge and wry presentation
were a perfect
accompaniment to the breathtaking scenery.

The crumbling remains of Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness
are a silent witness to Scotland's violent past and vain struggle to
reinstate the rightful monarchy.
This medieval fortress was blown up by government occupiers in 1692
to prevent it from becoming a Jacobite stronghold,
and was gifted in 2003 by its last owner to the National Trust of
Scotland.
It is currently maintained by Historic Scotland.
Corrimony Cairn, one of a number of "passage graves" found around the
inner Moray Firth,
was built about 4000 years ago, and is remarkably intact. It was most
likely covered by a stone slab,
and an excavation in the 1950s indicated it apparently held the remains
of one woman.
The narrow, winding roads of Glen Affric are lined with these ancient
stone walls.
Perfect for taking a breather and soaking up the surroundings.
